The Kids’ Writeshop (7-12)
The program inspires the habit and love for reading books of genuine literary merit across a variety of fiction and non-fiction genres. The whole language and balanced literacy approach to reading, speaking, shaping and writing with the use of authentic literature develops habits of learning: critical thinking and questioning, applying concept to problem-solving and communicating learning.
“Writer and reader both are responsible for the universe brought into being through the act of reading.” --Maxine Greene (1995)
Learning through reading prepares children to make meaning from the everyday and from the ever-changing future. It prepares them to be authors of their books and their lives.
Each module culminates in a Publishing Party where the children’s work and thinking are made visible in professional books and posters.
This one-year program develops children’s ability to become authors of children’s books. It is a qualification process for those committed to being part of the Young Writer’s Society.
